Research into similar products- Soap poster 2

The Hollyoaks advert is very unconventional and appears to mock the more widely known watched soaps, such as EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. It is saying that by rubbing some Hollyoaks on the original soaps you get a younger, more glamorous and attractive soap. This is in comparison to the drunken people in the dirty pub in the first image shown.

The poster is made up of two images, implying a spot the difference theme, and the whole purpose of it is to create contrasts. One of the images is set in a dirty, dark, old looking pub. The other is a complete contrast to this as it is set in a bright, glamorous, sophisticated looking bar. The characters are also shown as a contrast too. The main female on the first image is a scruffy looking, overweight woman. However, the Hollyoaks version is a slim, clean and tidy woman who looks like she takes great pride in her appearance. The class of people is also different, the first shows a group of middle class people, with the second image shows a group of higher class people, seen to be young and rich. This connotes that Hollyoaks is aimed at a younger, fun group of people who enjoy going out and having a good time in glamorous bars.

As soaps are mainly aimed at (and watched by) a female audience, the main attractive features of this poster are aimed at the female viewer. The image on the right is very feminine, with the main character being a woman in a glamorous dress. It is very clean cut and elegant; signifying the extravagant lives the characters in the soap have. The dog on the right hand image connotes a rich and feminine celebrity lifestyle, this is in contrast to the dog on the left hand side image which is more masculine and unattractive.

Colour and lighting is used to connote the feelings in the poster. On the image on the left, low key lighting and dull colours are used for the pub. This connotes a glum, unhappy atmosphere. It suggests  that the characters are of a lower class. This is in contrast with the image on the right. This uses high key lighting which connotes a happy, more cheerful atmosphere. The woman used in both posters is wearing a red dress, making her stand out most in comparison to the other characters shown. As the most prominent character, the reader can clearly spot the differences between the two women on the poster. One being untidy and overweight, the other being more glam and celebrity like.

The poster appears to challenge the conventions of other soap posters, due to the fact it includes two images, giving the audience a 'spot the difference' theme to explore. This may make the audience focus more on the poster, as they concentrate more to find these differences. The poster may be made like this to capture the minds of the younger target audience, it challenges the conventions to pull in the audience, rather than using the stereotypical conventions always seen. When planning my poster I will need to think about creative ways in which the create a successful conventional poster, whilst also ensure the audience is drawn in.
However, the poster does follow some regular conventions as it is primarily image, combined with smaller amounts of text which help to reinforce the theme and the purpose- to advertise Hollyoaks.
